Word of the day:

NIGGER

A derogatory term used to refer to black people

The age-old debate over the word “nigger,” the “N word,” was reignited after civil rights activist Rev. Jessie Jackson was recently caught on videotape uttering the word along with other shocking verbiage about Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama. The controversy spilled over onto the set of “The View” as Elisabeth Hasselbeck got into an emotionally-charged debate with Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd, both of whom are black, about why some black people are intent on using a word created to demean their race. Hasselbeck insisted that all individuals should refrain from using the word, while Goldberg and Shepherd worked to explain why the “N word” is only offensive when used by non-African-Americans. Now, chinika.com wants to hear from you. Is the use of the term ever appropiate?

The View Gets Heated Over the N-Word

If the N word is demeaning when said by a white person, I don't think it should be said by anyone. I used it as a teenager because back then everyone did. I didn't even know it was bad. Once I realized how bad it was I never used it again. It's like the F word. If you have any class, you just don't use it.

The N word is a terible and powerful word that has a painful past. I myself am guilty of using the word. I think that the word can be used causally however even then the word Nigger is NOT!!!!to be overused. For example when I use the N word I am very concious of the tone of voice inwhich I say it. Another rule of thumb i would like to note is it should NEVER EVER be used in the presence of our white colleagues or freinds (those of us who have them) so that they dont get the wrong idea and so that we dont demean ourselves.
