A derogatory term used to refer to black people

The age-old debate over the word “nigger,” the “N word,” was reignited after civil rights activist Rev. Jessie Jackson was recently caught on videotape uttering the word along with other shocking verbiage about Democratic presidential hopeful Barack Obama. The controversy spilled over onto the set of “The View” as Elisabeth Hasselbeck got into an emotionally-charged debate with Whoopi Goldberg and Sherri Shepherd, both of whom are black, about why some black people are intent on using a word created to demean their race. Hasselbeck insisted that all individuals should refrain from using the word, while Goldberg and Shepherd worked to explain why the “N word” is only offensive when used by non-African-Americans.
