Give In … It Wins©

Sparring with two chronic illnesses for several years has a way of toughening you up.  When the pains of rheumatoid arthritis disease and fibromyalgia became too unbearable, I would find the nearest mirror and sternly remind myself, “If you give in, it wins.” Day-by-day, the slogan became a part of me, ensuring hope. Bottom line — when you are fighting a chronic condition, there’s only so much your physician, family and friends can do. The rest is up to you. To turn the tables on my conditions, I fashioned the following guidelines:

• REMOVE DENIAL!

• Remain positive no matter what. It will help reduce stress.

• Quickly dismiss any guilt.

• Enlist an outstanding primary care physician and rheumatologist.  Also ask questions and take notes during doctor visits.

• Be proactive. Stay up-to-date on the latest findings on RA and fibro.

• Journal. Keeping a diary will help you to assess your situation plus keep track of what’s working and what’s not.

• Keep a notepad nearby to help manage “brain-fog”.

• Maintain a well-balanced diet. Increase consumption of fruits and vegetables. Decrease caffeine intake.

• Exercise, but don’t overexert yourself no matter how good you’re feeling in the moment. I repeat, no matter how good you’re feeling.

• Don’t try to be superwoman. Everything doesn’t have to be accomplished in one day.

• Become immersed in your favorite activities.

• Don’t be afraid to ask for help.

• It’s OK to cry as long as you promise to laugh too.

• Try to go to bed at same time each night. Ample rest is key in your recovery.

• Network. Join a support group to connect with people in similar situations. Discover what’s helping them cope.

In another effort to maintain a high quality of life, I created my own marketing and public relations agency, Chinika, LLC — the parent company of chinika.com. The decision not only allows me the flexibility to remain on my chosen career path but it also holds me accountable for maintaining the aforementioned regimen. see your strategy? No help for Fibro
written by Karla Thomas , August 25, 2009

I have had fibromyalgia for many years. I am almost 54 now. I appreciate all that is suggested but what does one do when there is no money to pay for things like message therapy (which is the one thing that helps me the most)? It is frustrating and depressing to not be able to get that help. If one cannot generate an income to support it then you feel lost and hopeless sometimes. I do love what you have done and respect you for your ability to be able to work despite your disabilities. I read about you in Arthritis Today magazine, by the way.
